I’m Jasmine Meek - The Bayside Doula. I’m here to give you the pregnancy & postpartum you need and deserve.

It takes a village…but our village is often far away, out of touch, or non-existent. A Pregnancy & Postpartum Doula can help fill this gap.

What is a Pregnancy & Postpartum Doula, anyway?

A pregnancy and postpartum doula is a professional trained to support a new mother from pregnancy through to the period after birth. Postpartum simply means ‘the time after childbirth,’ with no defined duration. In my opinion, it lasts as long as each new mother needs extra support…so maybe forever? You may have heard the term ‘the fourth trimester,’ and this is indeed a good place to start.

During those first few months after childbirth, a mother has a limited-time opportunity to rejuvenate, allowing her body ample rest in order to heal from the birth and for her hormones to balance out. It is also a crucial opportunity to let that magical love hormone, oxytocin do its thing. Producing this hormone facilitates milk production and the let-down reflex, acts as natural pain relief, and helps establish the bond between mother and baby. So how do we get more of this love hormone? Rest, food, loving touch, warmth, relaxation, and peaceful quiet time with your baby.

That’s where a pregnancy and postpartum doula comes in. During pregnancy, a doula will support you to create a calm and nurturing environment to reduce stress on your already hard-working body, and also to plan and prepare for early motherhood. After birth, a doula is there to meet your needs, especially your need peace and joy.

When it might feel like everyone around you is preoccupied with your little one, a pregnancy and postpartum doula is focused on you.

A pregnancy and postpartum doula can also support you through some of the common challenges of motherhood beyond the first three months - sleep challenges, anxiety and stress, overwhelming mental load, housework, and food preparation. A doula’s focus is always on easing the burdens on mothers. Because to nourish a baby, we must first nourish the mother.

“Birth isn’t just about making babies, it’s about making mums too.”

Julia Jones, Newborn Mothers

Some of what I offer:

  • Planning & Preparation

A smooth transition into motherhood can set you up for better outcomes many months down the track. All my postpartum packages include prenatal visits. Together we plan to reduce stress, maximise peace and joy, and plan to make your dream fourth trimester a reality.

  • Breastfeeding Education & Support

My prenatal services include online Breastfeeding Education. In your first weeks postpartum I offer reassurance and tips to support you in achieving your breastfeeding goals. I will help you tune into your body’s natural abilities. I can also support you in seeking specialist support, should there be any issues.

  • Cooking

It is so important to help your body heal after childbirth and to keep yourself fed and hydrated during such a physically taxing time. I will cook nourishing homemade meals and snacks that are tailored to your needs as a newborn mother. Warm teas and protein balls will be served up regularly.

  • Light Cleaning

A clear space to rest those tired eyes upon - that is what I would like to gift to you. I’ll always leave you with a lighter load after my visit. The amount of cleaning I do will depend on your needs on the day.

  • Emotional Support

As a Doula, I am here to support YOU. You may benefit from guided meditation or simply from a non-judgemental ear. With a background in psychology I offer a distinct set of skills aimed at helping you feel good.

  • Massage

I can teach baby massage and self-massage to you and your support people. This is a beautiful technique to help relax your baby and facilitate bonding. I am also training in postnatal massage and will be offering full body postnatal massage as part of my packages in 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A birth doula spends more time with a client during the prenatal period and focuses on planning for the birth. A Birth Doula also attends the birth as a support person. A postpartum doula is someone who focuses on preparation for, and support during the time after birth. A Postpartum Doula tends to the informational, emotional, and physical needs of the newly postpartum parent and family.

  • Postpartum Doulas respect your parenting choices. There is no one way to raise a baby. Whatever makes you feel peace and joy is usually what’s right for you and your family. My hope is for you to better enjoy your postpartum period, making sure that you get the rest and nourishment you need to not just survive your fourth trimester, but hopefully thrive. I can provide as much or as little evidence-based information about infant feeding as you like to help you make decisions around breastfeeding and bottle feeding.

  • First, call/email/text me - I can answer a few questions at this time, clarify package prices etc and if you desire, we can arrange an in-person cuppa.

Next, I come to you for a complimentary 30min cuppa so that you can see if I’m the right fit for you and your family. There is no obligation to book at this time.

Then, once you’re ready to book you decide on payment (Afterpay, payment plans or upfront payment) and complete an online intake form and sign a contract of services.

Finally, we agree on a prenatal planning date, along with a tentative postpartum start date and schedule (baby will come when baby is ready, so these dates are flexible).

  • The current research on infant brain development and sleep supports a nurture approach to infant sleep. My role is to help you to get rest, so I will gladly hold or watch your infant while you sleep. However, my role does not include any sleep training of your baby, as the research does not support sleep training during the first 12 weeks.

  • As a Postpartum Doula, I am not trained in birth or birth education. However, there are components of birth preparation that relate directly to postpartum care, for example the effects of birth interventions on breastfeeding. I can support you with education around this topic. I can also refer you to evidence-based, reliable resources for birth preparation.

  • Postpartum doulas are trained to support normal breastfeeding. I can give you tips on overcoming basic problems and I can keep an eye out for any breastfeeding ‘red flags’. If issues persist, I can provide resources and refer you on to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and other local support groups. Using nurturing, loving encouragement is the postpartum doula’s way of helping you gain the confidence to breastfeed your baby.

  • I adhere to government regulations in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have received two COVID-19 vaccine doses and a COVID-19 booster vaccine. If masks are mandated in public places I will wear a mask during in-home visits. When masks are not mandated, I give clients the choice between me wearing one or not, whichever helps my client feel more comfortable. I also work to ensure the safety of clients and families by wearing freshly cleaned clothing, washing hands regularly and using hand sanitiser, and limiting outside exposure to COVID-19 or other viral illnesses. If I am unwell our visit will be postponed to protect you and your family.

  • While Postpartum Doulas are aware of many of the challenges that arise in postpartum parents and babies, any health concern needs to be addressed by your primary caregiver or a public health nurse. My scope of practice does not include identifying or diagnosing medical conditions.

  • Absolutely! A parent’s needs for rest, nourishment, and support are even greater with twins. The postpartum doula becomes the new parents' extra arms.

  • Of course! In many ways it gets harder with each new addition to the family and a Postpartum Doula can be the extra set of hands you need.

  • I completely understand that not everyone has the cash available to make a lump sum payment. I offer Afterpay when paying via my website, or payment plan options for direct bank transfer on my fourth trimester packages. I also offer a 1hr 1:1 Zoom prenatal planning session for $40 and a Pay What You Can postnatal 1hr 1:1 zoom.

  • I earned a Postpartum Professional certificate and a Breastfeeding Professional certificate through the Newborn Mothers Collective. The Newborn Mothers Collective is specifically tailored for Postpartum Doulas. My background is in psychology, however I am not a registered psychologist. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of QLD and I am RE-studying part of this degree (long story!) at the University of New England in order to proceed to postgraduate studies in perinatal psychology. I have Baby and Child 1st Aid and CPR training through CPR kids.

  • I have a passion for helping mothers when they NEED it most. For some, it’s during the 4th trimester when their body needs maximum rest to heal. For others, it is after 6 months when sleep becomes an issue or approaching 12months when the end of maternity leave anxiety creeps in. Whenever you decide you need postpartum support, that’s when you call me.

Mother Blessings

Your transition from maiden to mother begins the moment you decide to have baby, and continues for years as you evolve and as you birth each new baby.

And it’s such a momentous transition that it has a name - Matrescence. Let’s honour this rite of passage with a special ritual - the Mother Blessing. Let’s shower the mother with love, words of affirmation and delicious food. Let’s hold space for her excitement and her fears. Let’s remind her that she is surrounded by supportive women who will show up, physically and emotionally during the postpartum period.
